Preparing for a Hurricane Heat? Here are a few things you might find helpful:
-
Will I do the same course as a Sprint or Super?
- Probably not. Hurricane Heat events are designed to be different, so you can expect a unique and interesting experience instead of just following the usual course.
-
Are there Hurricane Heats beyond Spartan Race sites?
- Yes, there are now stand-alone Hurricane Heats that may be held at different locations and on different dates from Spartan Race weekends. Check the schedule to see if one is coming to your area.
-
Can I pick my team?
- No, teams are mostly assigned at random by the Krypteia (event leaders) to encourage you to meet new people and step out of your comfort zone.
-
Can I do it with my friend?
- Absolutely! Bring as many friends as you like. While we can’t guarantee you’ll be on the same team, you’ll all share a memorable experience to talk about afterward.
-
What if I go and I don’t know anyone there?
- Spartans are a welcoming group. You’ll make new friends quickly, and soon you’ll feel right at home.
-
The Hurricane Heat is at 5 pm with a 4 pm check-in. Can I do the Sprint/Super/Beast beforehand?
- If the Hurricane Heat is on the same weekend and at the same location as a Spartan race, you’re welcome to take part in both. It’s all up to you.
-
Will it count towards my Trifecta?
- Hurricane Heat and other Endurance Events are separate from the Sprint, Super, and Beast series. Hurricane Heat doesn’t count toward the Race Trifecta, but it has its own Trifecta. If you complete a Hurricane Heat, a 12-Hour, and a 24-Hour event, you’ll earn a Hurricane Heat Trifecta.
-
How far do you have to run?
- The distance isn’t set. You’ll find out what’s required when you get there, based on the Krypteia’s instructions.
-
Do I have to bring equipment?
- Yes, there’s a gear list. You’ll receive it the week of the event, and it’s also available in the "Video" section on the main Hurricane Heat Facebook page.
-
Will I get wet like on a Spartan race course?
- Most likely. The Krypteia often includes water obstacles and mud in the event. You might want to bring dry clothes and a towel for after the event.
-
What if I can’t run fast or lift heavy items as well as other people?
- Hurricane Heat is a team event. Your group will work together to finish the tasks in the time allowed. Don’t worry, you’ll find a way as a team.
-
I heard that it’s military-based. I don’t have a military background. Will that count against me?
- While there are some military-inspired elements, you don’t need a military background to participate. This is not a boot camp—everyone is welcome.
-
Can I do a Hurricane Heat even if I’ve never done a Spartan?
- Yes, you can! Some Krypteia even had their first Spartan experience at a Hurricane Heat before ever doing a regular race.
-
How long does Hurricane Heat last?
- Standard Hurricane Heats last 4 hours. The 12-Hour version lasts, as you’d expect, 12 hours.
-
Will there be photos so I can post them on Facebook?
- Photos aren’t guaranteed at Hurricane Heat events. If any are taken, they’ll be shared on the official Spartan Endurance Facebook page.
-
Although all events are different, generally, what percent is a team based, and what percent is individual-based?
- This varies from event to event. How much you contribute individually or as a team is really up to you. No matter the challenge, it's about pushing yourself.
-
Are there general items on the gear list that never change?
- Yes.
- All athletes MUST wear a black shirt without logos.
- 1 Headlamp (per person), since it might get dark.
- 1 Black Sharpie Marker (per athlete)
- 2 Chem lights
- 1 Camelback, backpack, or ruck for your water supply.
- 3 Liters of water in bottles or a hydration bladder.
- 4 Salt/electrolyte packets for cramps.
- 2-4 energy gel shots, energy bars, or 500 calories worth of nutrition (enough for 4 hours).
- 1 roll of duct tape
- 50 feet of Paracord 550
- Multi-tool or pocket knife
- Additional items may be added to this list depending on the event.
- Yes.
-
What happens if I have a long-term injury or condition that means I can’t do a specific exercise or task?
- You can modify the exercise, or in some cases, your teammates can help you find a solution that the Krypteia approves.
-
Is there a weight requirement to carry in your gear?
- It depends on the event, but you should be prepared to carry some weight.
-
What’s the biggest difference between an HH and a HH12HR?
- The Hurricane Heat focuses on teamwork and the idea of never leaving a teammate behind. The 12-Hour version (HH12) also includes individual and team challenges, with more emphasis on putting the mission first, and helps determine eligibility for the Spartan Agoge.
-
What if I need to go to the bathroom?
- Try to go before the event starts, or make it quick if you need to step away. The event keeps moving, so let a fellow participant and a Krypteia know if you need to take a break so everyone stays accounted for.
-
Should I wear layered clothing and gloves? I am scared of the cold.
- You’ll probably get cold and wet at some point. Extra layers can help keep you warm, but they may feel heavier if they get wet. Choose your clothing based on what you know works best for you and be prepared for the conditions.
-
Is there somewhere I can research past events or talk to people who have done it before?
- Yes. There’s a Facebook group with Hurricane Heat veterans who are happy to share advice and answer questions. Check out the group here.
-
I can’t find my city on the Hurricane Heat events. Will my city have a HH or HH12?
- If your city isn’t listed on the schedule, it means there isn’t an event planned there yet. Sometimes events are in the works but not posted until all details are confirmed.

I haven't had an email or been told what to bring! Help!
- There’s a standard gear list (see above), but special items are often added. Usually, you’ll get an email with all the details—where to be, when, and what to bring—on the Tuesday before the event. It’s normal not to receive it until then.
- The Krypteia often shares a helpful video a few days before the email arrives. Keep an eye out for it.
- You can also use the event page to chat and organize with others. Find your Hurricane Heat event page by clicking here.
-
The Hurricane Heat is this weekend, and I can't sign up. What's Wrong?
- Registration may be closed. At this time, day-of registrations are not available.
-
Is there any way I can talk to the people who are going?
- Yes. Visit the Spartan Endurance Facebook page, click on "Events", and find your event. There you’ll find new participants, experienced Hurricane Heaters, and even the Krypteia, all ready to help.
-
How old do you have to be to participate?
- You must be 18 or older to take part in any Endurance Event (HH, HH12, HH24, Agoge).
-
Can I transfer my Hurricane Heat to a future event?
- You can transfer your registration for Hurricane Heat events up until the Monday before the event. Transfers are not allowed after that Monday.
