Considering participating in a HH12HR? Please review the following important information:
I have never participated in a Hurricane Heat before. Will that present a challenge?
Your success will largely depend on your physical and mental preparation. The Hurricane Heat serves as an excellent introduction to the structure of these events and the problem-solving abilities they demand. If you possess strong abstract thinking skills and a solid training background, you should be well-equipped to perform. However, please be aware that these events are rigorous and unpredictable. Full preparation is difficult, as the cadre may introduce unexpected challenges. Adaptability and responsiveness are essential.
How far will I need to run?
The distance will be determined by the Krypteia. Each event is unique, with no predetermined course length. Frequently, you will have opportunities to make choices during the event, so the total distance you cover will depend on the decisions you make to accomplish the assigned missions and objectives.
What should I bring if I have never participated before?
Do not be concerned; you will be informed of any specific requirements in due course. One essential item is a durable ruck, as you will need to carry it comfortably for the event's full 12-hour duration. A reliable hydration system is mandatory, as you are expected to be self-sufficient. While there may be opportunities to refill water on the course, do not rely on this. Additionally, ensure you have sufficient nutrition for the entire event. Understand your own fueling needs for 12 hours; do not depend solely on caffeine and avoid starting the event on an empty stomach. Be aware that the Krypteia may implement restrictions on eating at any time. Always consult the event page where participants gather and communicate prior to the event.
This is my first Spartan event. Am I adequately prepared?
Preparation is key. Consider your current level of fitness and experience. Are you beginning your training journey, or are you an experienced athlete? Your physical and mental readiness will strongly influence your performance. If you approach challenges with confidence and determination, you are likely ready. However, if you feel uncertain about your capabilities, it may be advisable to further your training and participate in shorter events before attempting the 12-hour challenge.
Can I participate alongside a friend, sibling, or another companion? Will we be able to stay together as in a traditional race?
While Hurricane Heat events foster camaraderie, the HH12HR emphasizes personal resilience and individual missions. It is your choice whether to remain with a companion; however, doing so may impact your ability to complete time-sensitive tasks, potentially resulting in a "Did Not Finish" (DNF) status.
Is bringing gear mandatory, as in a standard Hurricane Heat?
Yes. You will receive a gear list, and all items specified are required for participation.
May I bring my own food? Will there be scheduled breaks for meals?
You are responsible for your own nutrition. The event is self-supported, meaning you must provide your own food and hydration without external assistance. Bring sufficient food to sustain you for the duration of the event and eat whenever opportunities arise. The Krypteia will not announce designated meal breaks.
Is the event conducted over 12 consecutive hours, or can I take breaks and resume later?
The event is continuous, lasting twelve hours without interruption.
If I fail to meet a time requirement and do not finish on time, am I still eligible to receive a medal or patch?
Only those who finish the event receive the HH12HR shirt, patch, medal, or tag. Participants who do not finish will not receive these items.
Will there be event photographs, as in other Spartan Races?
Photography is not guaranteed at HH12HR events. Any photos taken will be uploaded to the main page. Occasionally, the Krypteia may also take and upload photos.
While each event is unique, what is the general ratio of team-based to individual activities?
The balance varies by event, but typically, at least one-third of the event consists of team-based tasks.
Are there standard items on the gear list that remain consistent?
Yes.
- All participants MUST wear a black shirt. This may be a t-shirt, sports bra, or tank top, but it must be black.
- One headlamp (required, as the event will begin in darkness)
- One black Sharpie marker
- One ruck/backpack
- One hydration unit—capable of carrying your own water supply (2L or 3L recommended)
- Sufficient food to last 12 hours
- Ruck weight must be a minimum of 25 lbs for men and 15 lbs for women (excluding hydration and food; please verify your total weight)
- Reflective safety vest OR PT belt
- Multitool
- Duct tape
Is there a weight requirement for the gear I must carry?
Typically, yes. Please refer to the email from the Krypteia for confirmation.
What distinguishes a HH from a HH12HR?
The Hurricane Heat primarily emphasizes teamwork and the fourth line of the Warrior Ethos, I will never leave a fallen comrade. The twelve-hour Hurricane Heat (HH12HR) establishes a higher standard and helps assess preparedness for the Spartan Agoge. The HH12HR includes both team and individual challenges, with a primary focus on the first line of the Warrior Ethos, I will always place the mission first.
Is it possible for the HH12HR to take place in an urban environment?
All scenarios are possible. Participants should be prepared to adapt to varying terrains and landscapes, as conditions may change without notice.
May a friend accompany or observe the HH12HR?
No. Spectators and shadows are not permitted at the HH12HR. Only registered participants may attend.
Is there a recommended type of backpack?
The selection of a backpack is at your discretion. It is recommended to choose a durable bag with sufficient capacity to hold all required supplies. A 21-liter volume is generally suitable for most participants.
What if I need to use the restroom during the event?
Please do so promptly. The event does not pause for breaks. If you need to step away, notify a fellow participant so your absence is accounted for. Expedite your return to avoid falling behind.
Should I wear layered clothing and gloves if I am concerned about cold weather?
It is likely you will encounter cold and wet conditions. While additional clothing may provide warmth, it can also increase weight when wet. Choose attire based on your personal needs and knowledge of how your body responds to various conditions. Prepare accordingly.
Is there a significant risk of encountering wildlife?
Yes, there is a possibility. Spartan events often take place in wilderness areas, where encounters with bears, deer, or snakes have occurred during course setup. Remain vigilant. Typically, sufficient noise is made during event preparations to deter wildlife, but caution is always advised.
Will survival skills be necessary?
While it is unlikely that survival skills will be required to overcome the event's challenges, the Krypteia may choose to instruct or assess you in such skills. All essential information will be provided in the gear list email, which you will receive within two weeks before the event.
Where can I research past events or connect with previous participants?
Yes. There is a Facebook group comprised of past participants who can offer advice and guidance.
I cannot find my city listed for Hurricane Heat events. Will there be a HH or HH12HR in my area?
