Trail World Championships

Spartan Trail is classic trail running without the obstacles! Get off the pavement and into the wild to explore some beautiful landscapes around the globe. More information can be found on  this page.

The Spartan Trail World Championship is a global championship with multiple stops around the world. Each World Championship race will feature multiple distances. Racers will compete for prize money at each event then with points on the leader board for the final prize purse payout.

There will be two separate championships held side by side, with a distance for each championship at every event, a Trail Ultra Championship and a Trail Run Championship. A Spartan Trail World Championship season does not stay within a calendar year, the inaugural season will begin in August 2020 and end in February 2021.

Regular Season vs Trail Run Championship Events

Regular Season Trail Event - Any Spartan Trail event that is not part of the World Championship series and generally held on the same weekend as a Spartan Sprint, Super or Beast race. Racers will have the opportunity to earn points towards the regular season leaderboard.

Championship Trail Event - Premier events around the globe offering points for the championship leaderboards and increased prize money for the top finishers. There will be 5 championship races. Each race will feature a Trail Ultra Championship distance and a Trail Run Championship distance. Also, there will be a Virtual Race component joining each Championship event, bringing the race experience to you.

What are the new race formats?

  • Original format: Live (physical) event hosted as originally scheduled (or rescheduled).
  • Elite Heats: Trail and Trail Ultra elite only races with prize money. Requires qualification for entry.
  • Open Heats: Non competitive (for prize money or Spartan Trail World Championship Points) marked courses for multiple distances open over multiple days. Races are timed and each event will decide its own prizes and awards.
  • Virtual Event: An interactive virtual race experience that brings the race to you.

Points Series & Leaderboard

At the Final Championship race awards ceremony, a Prize purse of $30,000 will be paid out to top Leaderboard contenders in the Spartan Trail World Championship. In order to be eligible for the final Leaderboard prizes, participants must be present and complete a Trail Ultra or Trail event distance at the Final Championship race. For the final ranking, the prize purse will be distributed between the Trail Ultra and the Trail Championship using each participant’s top 2 results, plus their Final Championship result.

Two separate points leaderboards will be tracked, a Trail Ultra Championship Leaderboard, and a Trail Run Championship Leaderboard. Points are not combined between the two leaderboards.

  1. Trail Ultra Championship Leaderboard - Only Trail Ultra Championship distances will be counted. See above "What Events Are Part Of The Championships" for what distances at each Championship race are included.
  2. Trail Run Championship Leaderboard - Trail Run Championship Race distances AND Regular Season Trail Events will be counted. Trail Run Championship Races provide increased points totals. See above "What Events Are Part Of The Championships" for what distances at each Championship race are included.
  3. Regular Season Leaderboard - Any event from 21k to 50k of a Regular Season race will provide points to a unique regular season Leaderboard, with its own prizes.
  4. Virtual Event Leaderboard - Each completed virtual event will earn a set qty of 20 points toward the Spartan Trail World Championship Leaderboard in the corresponding distance category regardless of ranking (i.e. completing Fjallmaraton Virtual 100K = 20 points OR Fjallmaraton Virtual 43K = 20 points).

Points leaders of the Trail Ultra Championship (1) and Trail Run Championship (2) are required to participate in a minimum of two Championship events, plus the Final Championship race in order to be eligible for points and awards. An athlete can participate in as many races from the Championship as desired, but only the top two results + final result will be considered.

Even though there are Elite Heats to participate for the prize money in an individual event, every participant from both the Elite Heats and the Open Heats will earn points toward the STWC final ranking. Open Heat Trail World Championship participants will earn points at 50% of the value on the points chart below.
