Open (Non-Elite) Point Series

Our Spartan Open Point Series assigns a ranking (totally separate from any Trifecta status) to all of our Spartans, nationwide. It began the SUNDAY after our World Championship event 10/4/15 and runs until 12/31/16. Starting in 2017 it will run from January 1st until December 31st every year.

In order for your results to be properly tabulated into rankings for our Spartan Point Series, you will need to "claim" all your results through Athlinks and make sure all your relevant races are grouped under one Athlinks profile. You can find out how to do that here, as well as fix common Athlinks profile problems.

Here's the specifics of how you earn points:

2017 Spartan Race Open Point Series:

(For Elite Points, please see: Spartan Elite Point Series and Ranking)

Base Points earned are weighted based on course distance:

Sprint: 96% points (288 total to first place male/female).

Super: 98% points (294 total to first place male/female).

Beast: 100% points (300 total to first place male/female).

We are excited to also announce our 2015 NBC event racers will be worth 5% more (NBC covered events will be indicated on the Event page).

NBC Sprint: 101% points (303 total to first place male/female).

NBC Super: 103% points (309 total to first place male/female).

NBC Beast: 105% points (315 total to first place male/female).

Finally, for the first time ever, we will have a Stadium Series with it's own points and rankings (Note: Stadium events will not count towards rankings with non-stadium events).

Stadium: 96% points (288 total to first place male/female).

How is it Calculated?

Points are calculated based on a % of best finish time for overall male and overall female (for example, overall male's time / your time x 95 points) AND based on a % of best finish time for age division (overall age div time / your time x 195 points).

10 Participation points are also awarded for each event completed

Example: The overall male finisher in a Spartan Beast wins 95 points for gender overall win + 195 points for age division win = 290 pts + 10 participation points for a total of 300 points. Your points would be Gender winner time / Your Time X 95 pts + Age div winner time / your time x 195 pts + 10 participation points.

Your top 5 best continental US races are used to earn points and any/all additional races keep 10 participation points.

  • To qualify for the Open Points Series you must race in a heat not designated as Elite. If you race in an Elite wave, those Elite points will not be combined with your Open points in the Open Series.
  • Stadium Event points and Non-Stadium (regular) Event points will be calculated separately.
  • Only your top 5 best races within the Continental US earn full points (for both the main and stadium series).
  • Tampa will count towards the Stadium Series.
  • If multiple laps are ran in a single day, only the initial lap will be counted towards points.
  • The NBC events are as follows and will air on NBCSN unless otherwise noted:

BIG SKY SPRINT (KALISPELL, MT)
JULY 20 11PM NBCSN

GOLDEN STATE CLASSIC (MONTEREY, CA)
AUGUST 23 10PM NBCSN

BLUE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE (PALMERTON, PA)
AUGUST 30 10PM NBCSN

SOUTHEAST SHOWDOWN (ASHEVILLE, NC)
SEPTEMBER 27 10PM NBCSN

THE SUMMIT (BRECKENRIDGE, CO)
OCTOBER 11 10PM NBCSN

REEBOK SPARTAN RACE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
DECEMBER 25 3:30PM NBC

    Hey Matt,

We are working with Athlinks right now on getting that Data up. Since some minor tweaks needed to be made to the formulas it wasn't as simple as just putting up a link this year, but I expect we will have it soon. 2015 is indeed going to be Epic!

NBC events are 5% more, just for being an NBC event...

I think there should be a TriFecta points bonus. I notice some "top ranked" athletes are only doing Sprints, & getting their points that way. In my opinion

I think there should be a TriFecta points bonus. I notice some "top ranked" athletes are only doing Sprints, & getting their points that way. In my opinion, those athletes performing at ALL Spartan Race levels (Sprints, Supers, & Beasts), should be rewarded in the Overall Rankings. I think that would be a better reflection. (Since the Stadium Series is being separated, that is also a step in the right direction. Those are too quick & easy comparitively, so racking up points just doing Stadium Races skews things.)

Any talk of point bonuses (like the NBC 5%, or the flat 10 participation points) for each TriFecta? Maybe even for a Hurricane Heat (when also doing the regular Race after)? Thanks! :-)

    Hello,

Thank you for your suggestions. The NBC generally have a much higher level of competition since they are televised which is why they are weighted higher than a normal non televised event. I will however pass the other suggestions along for consideration for 2016.

When will the stadium points be posted? And I know Tampa is a "Stadium" race, but isn't it a hybrid, being both in and outside the stadium, and around 4 miles? Not a big deal, I am just curious. Thanks

And I do think Skydiverhere has a valid point that the top ranked athletes are doing mostly sprints, I have read they do Beasts only when they have to...which I am assuming is the World Championships, I would like to see how many show up at Vermont this year just for fun.

Will the Super Beast in Tahoe be in the 2015 or 2016 season?

    Hi Matt,

I am not sure what you mean by the super beast, however the point season always ends on the day of the world championship which for 2015 is the Tahoe beast on Saturday October 3rd. So any events after that date will be part of the 2016 season.

    Thanks,

    Hi Matt,

I apologize for the confusion, since we offer both a super race and a beast race I was not sure what you meant. However the answer still stays the same in this case. Any event taking place after the WC event will count for the next season. So since the Ultra beast is on Sunday after the WC it will indeed count for the 2016 season.

So the Hawaii stadium race does not count towards the stadium series since it is not in the continental US correct? Would Fenway count as the first stadium race for 2015 then? Where can we find the stadium race standings?

    Hi Robin,

Correct, the Hawaii event is put on by a partner and not by us. Fenway will be the first event of the Stadium series. Since this is the only event we have had so far there are no standings to speak of at this point. Once we have more events we will get the standings up.

    Thanks,

On the rankings page, if I click on a name, I get "Sorry, this person does not have a Spartan profile yet." Is there a way to create a Spartan profile? Or is this an invitation only thing for selected racers? Just curious.

    Hi Richard,

At this time that is a feature we are not supporting and the racers with profiles are left over from racers that signed up when we had the beta of the feature. We are working on some updates and hope to roll it out to everyone in the future.

    Thanks

I noticed on my rankings update for AZ, I now have two profiles, where the points did not combine with my previous races. I went to Athlinks to claim the AZ races. Will this fix itself?

If you do the Hawaii trifecta does it count towards all of your trifectas? If Hawaii is my second Trifecta, do they have the 2X Trifecta medals there?

Hi - how does multiple laps per race work for rankings? I ran the 2015 Las Vegas Super twice (paid twice). At first Athlinks claimed my slower time and would not allow me to claim my faster time until I unclaimed the other. I'm guessing you can only claim one?

    Hi Gary,

Yes, any race in the world counts. You can read all about the Trifecta here:

    https://spartanrace.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202321438-What-is-the-Spartan-Trifecta-How-do-I-earn-it-

We expect the Hawaii event to have the Multiple Trifecta medals this year, however they are a partner of ours so we cannot guarantee it.

    Thanks,

    Morning Sarb,

Yes, only 1 lap per day event will count towards your rankings. I will make sure to update the FAQ to make clear. However if you are running in multiple events on the same day (such as when we hold a sprint and beast on a single day) you can run both of those and earn points in each event.

I want to collect in the ranking Open as many points. But the body of the race I have scattered in several places. With my name Jan Durin 3 positions are indicated. In doing so, I still am, by the same person. And in the last race Budapest Spartan Sprint have no points. Other competitors already have from these race points awarded.
The race my application data already in credential systems of 2014 and therefore are still the same. So I do not get it wrong assignment.
Fix it, please, that I had a body under one person.

Hi, I think this is a really great idea. It's nice to see how we match up against our peers. I understand why the elite have a reward system, but I'm wondering: does the open point series have one as well?

Everyone's running their own race, but some people are very competitive in the open waves. I'm really just trying to see if there is anything tangible to be gained from trying to rank highly.

    Hello,

No at this time there is nothing set for the open heat racers. As all of the most competitive racers are set in the elite that is currently where we award the prizes and is why there is a higher price for that heat. However we do have somethings in the works for the future, and something like this might be a possibility.
