What is the Spartan Trifecta? How do I earn it?

A member of the Spartan Trifecta Tribe finishes one of each Spartan distance - Sprint, Super and Beast - in a calendar year (January 1st - December 31st), anywhere in the world. You can earn multiple Trifectas in a single year, however only one lap per day, per event will count toward this accomplishment.
(If you run in both the Elite and Open series, still only ONE run through the course, per day, per event will count towards a trifecta.)

The Hurricane heat does not count toward a Trifecta.

Stadium Sprints do count as a "Sprint" towards the Trifecta.

Racers that complete an Ultra Beast will be able to count that as a "Beast" for their Trifecta. However, you must complete the entire Ultra Beast for it to count. Only completing half will not result in a "Beast" towards your Trifecta.

You can run the races in any order, the sprint does not need to be the first event.

There is nothing special that you will need to do to "claim" a trifecta medal, as you will earn the three pieces of it, as you complete your races during the season. Once you have your third piece, the medals will fit together to complete one big Trifecta medal. If you are earning your 2x, 3x, etc. Trifecta medal, they are available on site at the event. Please complete your race, then see our results tent and/or our announcer booth to be presented with your multi-Trifecta medal.

Trifecta merchandise (shirts, medal holders, etc.) will be available for sale at the merchandise tent at all events, but no additional merchandise, other than medal pieces, will be provided to Trifecta finishers.

Please note: Starting in 2015 all races in the world will award the Trifecta medal pieces. There are no single trifecta medals for any country.

*You do not need the trifecta pass to earn the Spartan Trifecta.

@mitchell - spartan will recognize it as a trifecta if its within the same year.

@tammy - spartan offers the Solid Trifecta medals to anyone that has completed multiple trifectas within the same year. I completed my first trifecta in 2014 but Spartan does not offer a medal single trifectas anymore.

I completed 2 trifectas this year so i qualify for the 2x trifecta medal.

@tammy - if you've completed 1 trifecta in 2015, if you can complete one more in 2015, you'll earn a 2x medal. if you complete one in 2015 and 1 in 2016, you would not get a 2x medal because it needs to be within the same year.

I will earn my second trifecta this year in Valencia, Spain. I know most of the international races have an international medal/ribbon. Will I also get an international version of my trifecta medal? Will I be able to pick up my trifecta medal at the race or will it be mailed to me?

Say I run the boston super on saturday, then run it again on sunday, will those both count towards the double trifecta?

@rachel - yes it will count twice. if you run 2 laps on saturday, only the best lap will count so by running it once on saturday and once on sunday, it'll count twice.

I haven't seen this question asked but I just earned my trifecta of 2015 I ran a sprint in march, super in august and a beast in November. I understand my pieces fit together to make my trifecta medal. My question is do I need to complete another 3 events before March of next year to earn the solid trifecta medal or can I get it after I complete another trifecta in 2016? Back to back years or same year?

    Hi James,
The single trifecta medal is made up of your wedge pieces, as you noted. If you're looking for the solid trifecta medal, those come from earning 2x, 3x (etc.) trifectas. That is the number of trifectas in a Calendar (Jan-Dec) year ONLY. So, to earn a solid 2x trifecta medal, you'd have to do 2 sprints, 2 supers and 2 beasts within the same calendar year.

I've seen pics of a guy with a 15x huge Trifecta medal (among others). How is this possible when there's less than a half dozen Beast/Ultra Beast events going on in a year within all of North America? I thought only one lap per event per day counts towards total.

It's because the trifecta is not limited to races completed in the US. There's 2-3 in Canada that you can earn, as well as another 2-3 in Mexico and then several in Europe and another in Australia, another in Hawaii, etc., etc. They all count. In fact, I was informed that the Supers are harder to accumulate than the beasts.

For the trifecta, do you have to run it in the order of: Sprint, super, beast? And can you get the pieces for the trifecta medal by competing in the open heat or is it only in the elite/competitive heat?

Hey John! You do not have to run the three distances in any particular order - just in the same calendar year. You do get a trifecta wedge piece by competing in ANY heat (open, elite, or competitive).

To get the trifecta, does each piece need to be earned at separate events, or would doing the sprint on Saturday and the super on Sunday both count towards it?

@Raven- they all have to be in the same year.
@Loni- yes both would count towards your trifecta

Didn't know I had to complete all three in a calendar year for the Trifecta. Do we just get regular medals if we aren't going to complete all three in a calendar year? I just signed up for my first sprint in October and have a super in December. Would you recommend changing changing my super to the 2017 and start building my trifecta for 2017?

I just wanted to clarify. If I was attempting to complete multiple trifectas, and I signed up to race a beast on Saturday and then again on Sunday at the same location, would that only apply to one trifecta or two?

So I am confused I ran sprint and super last year ( 2015). wasn't going to do any more. Was convinced by somebody representing spartan that if I did the beast I could say I had my Trifecta. Just completed the Beast race, I have all 3 parts and I have them in the trifecta holder, Feeling so proud of my trifecta and now I am reading I don't really have it? I even have a screen shot from spartan UK using 2 medals 2015 and 2016 in their representation of a trifecta.

In order for it to qualify as an actual trifecta, you need a Sprint, Super and Beast complete within a calendar year. So races done last year will technically not count towards a trifecta this year.
@Annie Loch- that would count as 2 Beasts for multiple trifectas, because they are on different days. However, if you ran 2 Beast laps in one day, it only counts towards 1 trifecta, not two (which is where I think you were getting confused).

The only one lap per day rule is an absolute joke.  If you are mentally and physically strong enough to handle two or more laps in a day you should be rewarded for it.  I am going for my double trifecta this year and was going to have an issue finding two different Supers to do because Spartan does not offer enough of Supers in New England and the Northeast (hint, hint) so I did two laps last Saturday because on Sunday I had a prior family commitment.

Spartan should make this BS rule WAY more readily available when you go to buy an Annual Pass.  On the Annual Pass page it right now advertises "Earn as many Trifectas as you want" and the waiver at checkout makes no mention of one lap per day either.  I actually emailed the Spartan Help Desk asking why I couldn't sign up for two laps in one day online and they told me that I could sign up for a second lap that day in person and made no mention that a second lap would not be counted.

I gave you my money for two laps, you have my time for two laps, you have my actual race photos from both laps, I finished both laps, why do they both not count?  Honor my two laps for what they are, a dedication to Spartan races.

I am running the Super in Vegas 2017. Am I able to run the Sprint the following day and have it count towards the Trifecta?

I bought the Destination Pass (6 races) for the specific purpose of getting a double trifecta this year.  This is my 2016 goal and now after digging around the site trying to figure out why the count of my races isn't correct, I see that running a race twice in a day doesn't count!?  Well, that makes absolutely no sense.  I paid twice and ran the race twice (Houston Sprint Elite and Open) to get the Sprints done.  I then ran the Tahoe Beast Open on Saturday and the Tahoe Beast Elite on Sunday.  The website shows that I have only run each race twice even though my bib times show a total of the four races.  I am planning on running the Alabama Super Elite and Open in one day to complete the double.  I can't accept that the second runs don't count.  After all, it is much more difficult to do a race twice in a day than it is to have them separated.  Also, some people can't afford to double the amount of travel needed to complete them all on separate days.  I paid for six races, I will be running six races (2 of each) and I should get the double.  I EARNED IT!!!

I have a question? If I ran either one of the races this year, and I am signed up for 2 of the races for next year will the medals come together to make a trifecta or will next years medals be different?
