What is the Spartan Trifecta? How do I earn it?

A member of the Spartan Trifecta Tribe finishes one of each Spartan distance - Sprint, Super and Beast - in a calendar year (January 1st - December 31st), anywhere in the world. You can earn multiple Trifectas in a single year, however only one lap per day, per event will count toward this accomplishment.
(If you run in both the Elite and Open series, still only ONE run through the course, per day, per event will count towards a trifecta.)

The Hurricane heat does not count toward a Trifecta.
Racers that complete an Ultra Beast will be able to count that as a "Beast" for their Trifecta.
Racers that complete any stadium event, or Cornell College Classic, will be able to count that as a "Sprint" toward their Trifecta.

You can run the races in any order, the sprint does not need to be the first event.

There is nothing special that you will need to do to "claim" a trifecta medal, as you will earn the three pieces of it, as you complete your races during the season. Once you have your third piece, the medals will fit together to complete one big Trifecta medal. If you are earning your 2x, 3x, etc. Trifecta medal, they are available on site at the event. Please complete your race, then see our results tent and/or our announcer booth to be presented with your multi-Trifecta medal.

Trifecta merchandise (shirts, medal holders, etc.) will be available for sale at the merchandise tent at all events, but no additional merchandise, other than medal pieces, will be provided to Trifecta finishers.

Please note: Starting in 2015 all races in the world will award the Trifecta medal pieces. There are no single trifecta medals for any country.

*You do not need the trifecta pass to earn the Spartan Trifecta.

I have a question about the "1 lap per day per event" information. To clarify, does this mean if you do 2 of the same race (EX: Completing a Sprint and then doing it again in the same day) you don't get a second medal with Trifecta piece?

    Hey William,
You would get a second medal. However, the second race would not count toward your requirement total for completing a trifecta; it would only count as having finished one Sprint. This would only be a factor if you were aiming to complete two trifectas this year, as you would still need to complete another Sprint race on a different day. You could race Saturday and Sunday and that would count as two Sprints completed toward the trifecta, but two Sprints on the same day only counts as one sprint toward the trifecta (though you still get a medal each time you finish a race).

OK so like before, I have read the entire thread and I now have 2 new questions that are not addressed on this thread.

    1) You said that once a race is complete in another country, we will get the Beast 1/3 piece mailed to us as long as it is registered through Athlinks.com. I followed the steps above and registered at Athlinks.com. My race just happened in Ottawa on the 27th of July in Mont Ste-Marie, CN (Ottawa). It won't be too long before they post it on Athlinks.com. Once it is posted, where do we go to submit a claim/request for the 1/3? Or will it be mailed to us automatically?

    2) Do we get a special lanyard for the Trifecta? I noticed the Canadians had a really sweet Trifecta lanyard with their country's flag and said Trifecta. Will we be getting an additional lanyard seeing how all these 1/3rd's are attached to our perspective race medals? Or do we have to stick all our pieces together with no lanyard and have it look all ghetto?

My personal input….. stick with an overall medal. From everything that I have seen, it appears that these pieces are nothing but headaches with never ending questions for you guys.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Frank,
To clarify, if you finished your trifecta in Ottawa, we'd be happy to make sure you get your final piece of your trifecta medal. Please contact us (us@spartan.com) with the races you did, as well as a mailing address.

There is no special lanyard for the trifecta at this time. The three wedge pieces stick together via magnets, to form a larger Trifecta medal.
    Thanks!

I'm seriously bummed! My first Spartan was the SoCal sprint in January. I'm doing the SoCal beast in September, but there isn't a super close enough to me before Dec, 31st. Why isn't there a SoCal Super with the beast instead of another sprint? Now I have wait until January to go for the Trifecta again. This sucks!

Hey Jen! The closest super would be in Sacramento on October 25th. It might be a haul to drive the length of the great state of California, but trust me, it's worth it for the pride you'll feel holding that trifecta medal. Good luck getting all three pieces!

I completed a Stadium sprint earlier this year in Hawaii but I was not given a sprint piece for the trifecta. I will participate in the Super and Beast next weekend. My question is is Hawaii considered outside the "US" since it's not contiguous? Does that mean once I've completed the Super and Beast I will get the medal that's in one piece?

    Hi George!
Hawaii is "separate" from the continental US for things like registration and medals, etc. If you're competing in events solely in Hawaii, they will have certain medals for you. If you're doing some in the continental US and some in Hawaii, shoot us and email with your races, and we can let you know your options!

Thanks Aja! It would be a nice incentive in addition to the cool metal, t-shirts, etc....I will be completing my Trifecta in 41 days total. Boston Sprint, NJ Super Spartan & VT Beast. AROO!!! And yes I just got off the couch and did it, never ran this much before or trained so hard for something.

I saw the sneak peak picture of the belt buckle medals for this year's Ultra Beast. Pretty sweet. I'm signed up and plan to complete it as the final piece of my Trifecta this year. So my question is, will UB finishers also receive the Beast 1/3rd medal piece to complete the Trifecta pie?

    Joshua,
Correct - We will have the wedge medals available, so that any UB finisher who would like one (in addition to their belt buckle) can have one!

You should do stadium medal slices next year, like a 5slice medal that connects if you complete all baseball stadiums.

I've seen it written elsewhere that "currently racing season is September to September. The world championship race date sets the racing years calendar" but here you mention calendar year Jan - Dec. Is is really Jan - Dec, Sept-Sept or something else to be considered Trifecta Tribe?

    Hi Mike,
Great question! What you're referring to is our POINTS season. The POINTS season is what determined our top Elite Athletes, etc. and culminates in the World Championship Race in VT in September (more on this here: https://spartanrace.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202641333-Spartan-Point-Series-and-Ranking).

TRIFECTA status is entirely different and based on CALENDAR year. Trifecta status is for the racer looking to complete all three distances and earn their Trifecta medal, etc.

Will there still be the 2x bigger trifecta medlas for double finishers in the US? Since we are getting pieces, and not a full round one, I'm not sure what to expect for next year and just wondering...

    Dillon,
We haven't finalized our plans for next year yet, but this year (through the end of the calendar year 2014), any trifecta finishers that finish a 2nd or 3rd (4th, 5th...) trifecta will be able to receive special multiple trifecta medals. They are a single round medal (not pieces, like the original trifecta is) and are larger, the more trifectas they get!
For 2015, you'll just have to stay tuned!

For the double trifecta, do we need to email in advance to get the double trifecta medal?

So I just got hooked on Spartan Races but it's nearly the end of the year. I did a stadium sprint in August, signed up for a Super in October but cannot find a Beast before the end of the calendar year. If I do a beast in early 2015, that will not count as completing a trifecta? Will the medals in 2015 be different so that I wouldn't be able to piece all 3 parts together?

    Hi Nicki!
You do NOT need to email in advance to receive your double trifecta medal! When you finish your last race to earn it, just head over to the Announcer/DJ area. They'll verify your races and present you with your medal! AROO!

    Hi Ryan!
Unfortunately, the trifecta for 2014 is calendar year ONLY. We haven't made any official decisions about 2015 medals yet, so I can't say whether they will still all fit together, etc. Sorry!

I will be earning my double trifecta in Vermont. Got the first one in US with the pie pieces, then did a bunch of races in western Canada (5 sprints and a Super). Is it possible to pick up one of those double Trifecta medals in Vermont and still pick up a Canadian trifecta medal in Sun Peaks the following weekend? I will only have one pie piece and I want the awesome Canadian trifecta medal.

I shouldn't have to wait until next year to start earning a trifecta! The calendar year rule is just plain stupid. The trifecta season should start from your first race no matter when in the year it is.

    James,
If you have the 6 appropriate races, once you finish VT (regardless of where you a ran them), then we would absolutely give you a double trifecta medal in VT. When you finish the Sun Peaks Race (Canada) the following weekend, that would complete an all-canadian trifecta, and they would absolutely provide the Canadian trifecta medal, as well. Sounds like you planned it well! AROO!

    Mihir,
Unfortunately, in order for us to keep track of people that earn their trifectas, we do need to have a clear start and end date to work from. Calendar year was the time period that made the most sense to our racers. I apologize if this is inconvenient for you.

    Hi Erick!
Unfortunately, that would NOT qualify for a trifecta. 2014 trifecta is Calendar year only (Jan-Dec).
